The spot on the tail
Red drum carry at least one black eyespot near the tail, and sometimes a scattering of them. The long-held explanation is that it draws a predator’s strike away from the head.
Tailing on the flats
In shallow water redfish feed head-down on crabs and shrimp, which tips the tail up above the surface. On a calm morning over a low tide you can see the fish before you can see the fish.
Schools and singles
Younger redfish hold in the bays and on the flats in schools that can run to the hundreds. Older, larger fish move offshore to spawn and are far more often found alone.
