Grass is the whole story
Spotted seatrout live over seagrass. The grass holds shrimp and small baitfish, and the trout sit in the sandy potholes between the beds waiting on them. Find healthy grass and you have found the fish.
Spots and canines
Dark spots scattered across the back and tail give them the first half of the name, and two prominent fangs in the upper jaw give them their other one. The mouth is soft, so a hooked fish is easy to lose.
They do not travel far
Seatrout are largely a resident fish. Tagging work has shown many spend their whole lives within a few miles of where they hatched, which is why the same stretches of flat produce season after season.
