A hooked grouper’s first move is straight back to the hole it came out of. If it reaches structure it will break you off on the rock. The first few seconds decide the fight.
Ambush, not pursuit
Grouper hold on ledges, wrecks and hard bottom, sitting still and inhaling prey with a sudden expansion of the mouth. They do not chase over distance. They wait.
They change sex
Many grouper species begin life as female and become male as they age and grow. It is one reason the larger fish matter disproportionately to the population, and why grouper seasons and size limits are managed closely.
