Sharp-eyed and wary
Mangrove snapper are notoriously cautious. They will follow a bait, inspect it and refuse it. Lighter line and a natural presentation matter more with these than with almost anything else nearshore.
From the roots to the wrecks
Young mangrove snapper live inshore among the mangrove roots the species is named for. As they grow they move out to the nearshore ledges, wrecks and hard bottom, and the largest fish are found further offshore again.
Worth the trip home
White, firm and mild. Mangrove snapper is among the better eating fish in the Gulf, and cleaning your catch is included, so it goes home ready for the pan.
