Kingfish Fishing Charter Bradenton
King mackerel on the nearshore wrecks and ledges. A seasonal run, and one of the hardest first strikes on this coast.
From $425 for three hours · priced per boat, not per person · six anglers maximum

The fish
Kingfish, or king mackerel.
The water
Nearshore wrecks and ledges.
The season
Seasonal. Call to check what is running.
The smoker run
A hooked kingfish takes line fast enough that the reel is said to smoke. First runs of a hundred yards and more are ordinary. Nothing else nearshore here empties a spool like it.
Built for speed
A long streamlined body, a deeply forked tail and a mouth of sharp shearing teeth. King mackerel hunt in open water and cut a bait clean in half rather than swallowing it whole.
They follow the bait
Kingfish are migratory, moving along this coast with water temperature and with the schools of bait they feed on. Whether they are showing nearshore has more to do with what the bait is doing than with the calendar.
