Human teeth
Sheepshead have flat incisors at the front and heavy molars behind — a mouth built for crushing barnacles, oysters and crabs. It is genuinely unsettling the first time you see one up close.
The convict fish
Five or six dark vertical bars down a silver body give sheepshead their other name. They sit tight to pilings, rock and oyster bar, grazing on whatever is growing there.
Bait thieves
That crushing mouth can strip a bait without the rod ever loading. Sheepshead have a long reputation for being hard to hook, and the old line is that you set the hook just before they bite.
